‘Z(EROS) NO ONES’ BROOCH
There are layers of meaning in this brooch - all stemming from the figure zero. Zero as an intensifier, increasing the value of any other number it is placed next to. As the basis of binary code on which our society functions. For Freud zero represented what a woman is- a gap, absence of maleness & therefore a lesser being. Zero as nothing; however not a thing is still a thing…a powerful, mysterious thing.
In the brooch the zeros move up & down, with no ones, playing with words, disrupting punctuation, punching out a message of questions.
